quote-it-all-begins-and-ends-in-your-mind-what-you-give-power-to-has-power-over-you-if-you-leon-brown-55-39-75Is food controlling you? If so, you may have an eating disorder. Many people with eating disorders are not even generally aware that they even have one. Binge eating, and or overeating specifically are some of the most common.

In the past many people associated eating disorders primarily with women. Studies have shown that just as many men if not more struggle with eating disorders.

Here are some behaviors to be aware of if you think you or someone you love may be suffering with a binge eating disorder:

  1. Lack of control once eating has begun:  This is one of the first indicators that there could be an eating problem.  If you are full yet you can’t and or won’t stop eating there is a problem. If you almost always eat till you are beyond miserable there is a problem. Now I am not talking about Thanksgiving dinner and other holidays were generally we over indulge.
  2. Depression: If you tend to always feel depressed and turn to food for comfort this could be another sign.
  3. Grief: If you feel like you just can’t say no without feeling bad and thinking about it. Not having it is actually breaking your heart.
  4. Anxiety: Knowing you shouldn’t be over eating or binge eating and somehow it makes you anxious when you do and when you don’t.
  5. Shame: Worried about what others will think if they only knew the way you really eat when no one is looking. Hiding food so that no one knows what and how much you are eating.
  6. Disgust or self hatred: Once the high of binging on food subsides you feel disgusted with yourself. You go into a phase of self loathing that either triggers you to want to diet, or make a change but you just never seem to be able to do it.

Why can’t you do it? You can not diet away an eating disorder. There are generally underlying emotional reasons that trigger overeating and binge eating. This is why a large percentage of people who have gastric bypass, lap band, or other weight loss surgeries or go on diets tend to in the long term gain back some if not all and more of the weight they lost.  Until you learn how to have a new and healthy relationship with food, it will be a never ending cycle that will destroy you.

The good news is that there is hope and help to end binge eating and overeating. There are counselors, and various inpatient and outpatient programs. There are online groups and tools that can help you. A great place to start would be to check out the End Binge Eating Disorder and Compulsive Overeating disorders site. There are free tools to get you started and on your way to healing and recovering from a life of overeating and binge eating.

There is recovery from a life of food addiction. It is simply up to you to take back the power you have given to food and develop a healthy relationship with food that will last a lifetime.

Janis-Jibrin-guest-post-Are-You-A-Food-Addict

Hello,

I wanted to post a blog about something that is a very personal thing for me in hope that it would maybe help someone else as well. Food addiction and eating disorders are a very serious thing. Food addiction does not just plague overweight and obese people but it also affects normal weight people as well, yet their bodies are genetically more equipped to process the extra calories or they may just increase their workouts / physical activities to compensate for it. Food addicts of all sizes will continue to eat and eat regardless of the consequences it can have on their health and even their relationships. Just like many other addictions, food addicts will have trouble changing their behavior even if they want to and even if they try repeatedly.

I came across this information on Web MD I thought I would share it here to help you determine if you are dealing with a food addiction. ALOT of times people don’t even realize they have one. This will help you identify if it is something you need to address within yourself.

Web MD : Researchers at Yale University’s Rudd Center for Food Science & Policy have developed a questionnaire to identify people with food addictions.

Here’s a sample of questions that can help determine if you have a food addiction. Do these actions apply to you? Do you:

  • End up eating more than planned when you start eating certain foods
  • Keep eating certain foods even if you’re no longer hungry
  • Eat to the point of feeling ill
  • Worry about not eating certain types of foods or worry about cutting down on certain types of foods
  • When certain foods aren’t available, go out of your way to obtain them

The questionnaire also asks about the impact of your relationship with food on your personal life. Do these situations apply to you:

  • You eat certain foods so often or in such large amounts that you start eating food instead of working, spending time with the family, or doing recreational activities.
  • You avoid professional or social situations where certain foods are available because of fear of overeating.
  • You have problems functioning effectively at your job or school because of food and eating.

The questionnaire asks about withdrawal symptoms. For example, when you cut down on certain foods (excluding caffeinated beverages), do you have symptoms such as:

  • Anxiety
  • Agitation
  • Other physical symptoms

The questionnaire also tries to gauge the impact of food decisions on your emotions. Do these situations apply to you?

  • Eating food causes problems such as depression, anxiety, self-loathing, or guilt.
  • You need to eat more and more food to reduce negative emotions or increase pleasure.
  • Eating the same amount of food doesn’t reduce negative emotions or increase pleasure the way it used to.

I used these questions, and although I could not answer yes to a majority of them I answered yes to enough of them which are still problematic in my life. Maybe I am not as deep in my addiction as I believed myself to be, but if I don’t address it, like any other addiction it will escalate and it is only a matter of time before it controls every aspect of my life.

This year my goal (the only goal I set for myself) was to once and for all reach my goal weight and become healthy and fit both mentally and physically. Part of that I knew had to address the mental side of how I am overweight to begin with or long term it will just be in vain. That is also one reason why for me I have not elected (although I have been tempted ) to have weight loss surgery because I know that surgery will not make my addiction go away in the long run. It has to be dealt with and managed as a holistic approach to my weight loss and health.

So, I have spent the entire month of January just laying the foundation for me to successfully reach my goal. In some ways it set me back and in other ways it has propelled me forward. Here are some of the things I knew I MUST have or do in order to achieve recovery from food addiction.

  1. I needed to accept the fact that I indeed  had a food addiction.
  2. I needed to find a support group that specialized in food addiction / compulsive overeating . I found 2 on Facebook which have been helpful so far.  I would recommend a 12 step program or counseling
  3. I needed to do some personal inventory on myself to understand why I developed this to begin with so I have been reading self help books and being honest with myself in order to help myself.
  4. I needed to find an accountability partner who could help hold me accountable and help me stay focused.
  5. I needed to understand that I must celebrate even the smallest of victories and see my failures as one step closer to success.
  6. I needed to make baby steps daily to change long-term.
  7. I needed to have a meal plan in place that is realistic for me and something my family can follow as well. (drinking Shakeology helps me here)
  8. I needed to log my food consumption so that I can be aware of exactly what I am eating.
  9. I created a Facebook group (if you want to join it let me know) of other people like myself who are working to get healthy and fit and we share successes and failures and I have found it quite helpful and effective. We keep each other motivated and encouraged. (This is different from having an accountability partner)
  10. I needed to commit to working out / exercising no less than 3 times a week. (My Beachbody workout programs help me in this area)

For me these are all the things I discovered are essential to my recovery and once and for all having the healthy lifestyle that I so truly and deeply desire. I know how to help people get healthy. I know how to help people work through their emotional issues that cause them to overeat.  It is easy to help others for many reasons. First and foremost it keeps me encouraged on my own journey. Second as long as I am focused on helping others I dont have to concentrate on myself as much… There is the solution ans that is to go on the journey with them and that is what I prefer.

One of the most healing and beautiful things I have learned through the process of getting emotionally and physically healthy is to embrace and love my body and to start showing it love through how I take care of it. This has been one of the hardest things I have ever had to learn and do in my life.

I am not licensed in anything other than driving and I don’t pretend I am an expert, BUT I can share with you through trial and error what I have learned and what I have shared with others that has helped us all on our way on the road to being healthy and healed.  If you find yourself needing help, I will help you and I will be honest with you about the changes you will need to make in order to live a better, healthier life. The first step and the most important step you will ever make is to reach out for help. When you do I will be there for you. You can contact me through the contact me tab at the top of this page. I would love to hear from you.

Les Mills Pump Flow Review Day 4

les-mills-flow

Hi Beautiful People!

I wanted to share my Les Mills Pump Flow review for day 4 with you. I really didn’t want to workout today but I found a way to make myself do it. Do you ever have days like that? I felt incredibly grateful for the health and fitness support I had to push through and just do it! In the video I share my thoughts on the whole thing. :)

212 Degrees The Extra Degree

steam engineHi Beautiful People!

The other night I was having an inspired conversation with my brother in law Gary Claiborne. We began talking about many things of great interest, but one of the things we talked about really resonated with me for some reason and I just had to share it with you today.

Gary told me of a book he read titled “212 Degrees: The Extra Degree” written by Author Sam Parker. I have not read the book yet but I have added it to my list of books that are a must read.

The philosophy behind this book is that 212° the extra degree captures the essence of excellence in an unforgettable way… At 211° water is hot. At 212°, it boils. And with boiling water, comes steam. And with steam, you can power a train. The one extra degree makes the difference.

Now lets think about this and apply it to life and our dreams, goals, successes, and failures….  If you think of 211 degrees as “you” just going along trying to accomplish things and you feel as if you are doing your best and you keep trying and working and trying and working and failing and trying again and now you are beginning to feel defeated and you want to just give up…

What if when you are ready to give up (at 211 degrees) , what if that is right before you are about to succeed? You see, the only difference between hot water and boiling water is one degree. Consider when you reach success to be 212 degrees, the only thing that took you to that boiling point was just that 1 extra degree.  Do you really want to give up when you are so close to succeeding?

I think this is a great book to add to any reading list and I cant wait to read it! In the meantime, if you are ready to give up on something that you have been working towards maybe all you need is a renewed look at whatever it is to feel inspired to keep going. I am here to tell you that you may fail over and over again but I promise if you keep going and NEVER give up you will eventually see success! Maybe all you need is someone who can offer a new perspective or even just some support and motivation. If that is what you want and need contact me and I can help. :)  Click Here to contact me for help

This is a great video to motivate and inspire you! Take 3 minutes and invest in yourself and watch it. :)

Weight 3/26/13

Weight 3/26/13

If you battle with your weight you understand how easy it is to fall into gaining weight back after losing it. Over the past few weeks I noticed my pants fitting a bit tighter. I hopped on the scale today to discover I have gained 17 pounds! This wont do at all!

February was a rough month for me with my late husbands birthday and our wedding anniversary along with alot of stress at work and a workout partner who quit on me. Somehow I turned to what I do best just functioning the best I could. Grabbing drive thru food almost daily and eating out several times a week. This lifestyle catches up with you.

I have said this before that I struggle to find balance. I have a great support team with my Beachbody team and even my Beachbody customers. The reality is I will always have to be on my guard when it comes to my weight. I have an addiction to food. I abuse it. When my life is chaotic so is my quality of nutrition. It isnt that I eat alot of food, it is the types of food I am choosing to eat. Calorie rich high fat foods with little nutritional value.

I took a picture of the scale today so you can see that I am being truthful with you as I always have been. It is also a form of accountability for me that seems to help me. By sharing it with the world I have to accept it as being real and that means I have to face it and deal with it.

I am always working towards my goals of getting fit and being healthy even when I backslide I do my best to get right back on track! Thomas Eddison failed over a thousand times before he succeeded. If I have to fail over and over while reaching my goal then I have in fact succeeded.

I stopped having Shakeology for breakfast once a day for starters and that was a big mistake! I will change that starting tomorrow morning. The next thing is to stick with my workout program whatever it may be. I completed 47 days of Les Mills Pump and I loved it. I also tried Zumba very recently and it was alot of fun. Im thinking of doing Turbo Jam or Turbo Fire for a round to see what I can do with it. Either way I will be working out!

Life Happens, Do You Quit Living

One of the things that I love most about using Beachbody programs and products to lose weight and get healthy is that even though I am a Beachbody coach myself I have an entire coaching network of people to help me stay on track and focused when life feels like it gets the best of me.  Having this type of fitness support has made all the difference in my weight loss thus far.

Recently I have had alot happening in my life that is requiring more of a time commitment and it has made it very hard for me to stay on my P90X  routine the way it should be done. Rather than just give up and quitting,  I am going to make some temporary adjustments to my workout program and my nutritional program as well.  For now I am going to be using Tony Horton’s 10 Minute Trainer 5-6 days a week.  Rather than quit I am making this adjustment that will still keep me moving forward to the end result I am looking for.

I have lost over 70 lbs and 60 inches so far and I feel like I hit a wall so to speak as far as my progress. When life happens (and it will) you still have to stay true to your health and fitness, not doing that got me up to 320+ pounds in the 1st place! When I look at the 120 lbs that I still need to lose it sometimes feels as if it will never come!  One of my fellow coaches reminded me that 1-2 lbs a week is a healthy pace to lose weight in order to be healthy and maintain and build muscle. Going by that I am right on track.

Another one of my fellow coaches, and success partner told me that just because I was switching my workout program didnt make me a quiter or a failure but to give up would… I will never give up but if I need to make modifications to what I am doing as life happens I will always do so. Thus always moving forward towards my goal.

As far as nutrition goes… I have 106 days till my 40th birthday!!! On day 100 I will be starting a 100 day clean eating challenge for myself. I have found some incredible tips on how to eat clean on this blog http://thegraciouspantry.com  I will also be doing my best to follow the top 2 tiers of Michi’s Ladder which is a nutritional program not a diet! I will never ever diet again! Diets dont work!

All I can say is that to make changes to any program you are on to accomodate to an ever changing daily life is a great approach that even Tony Horton himself endorses.  To sum it all up into the words of Tony Horton… “Do your best, forget the rest” and this is some advice I will be taking and using!

I would love you to join me on this journey. If you have any questions please post them below.

If you are ready to change then what is stopping you?

***SHAKEOLOGY REVIEW***

   Shakeology Review

Chances are you are doing a google search right now trying to find a Shakeology review.  Is Shakeology something you need to use. Well I wandered the same thing myself!

I decided to try Shakeology Meal Replacement for 9 weeks to see what would happen. Was Shakeology everything it was being hyped up to be.

I decided that the only change I would make during that time would be that I would only drink the Shakeology drink once a day as it suggests. That is exactly what I did.

Boy was I suprised at what happened next! I honestly did not expect to see any Shakeology results in the 9 week time period but I thought it isnt really a diet it was created to be a nutritional supplement so maybe I will feel better if nothing else.

What happened to me over the next 9 weeks was nothing but extrordinary!

Here is my blog post from week 8:

I have been using Shakeology 1x a day on most days and not dieting for 8 weeks now. I hit a plateau in weeks 5 and 6 which I was prepared for and that did make it easier to accept =) Then in week 7 I lost a few more pounds and now by week 8 I have lost nearly 30 lbs of fat!!! I have lost 19 inches all over my body as well.

The key thing about Shakeology is that it isnt a weight loss fad, but whole food nutrition the best of the best products and ingredients available. This is nutrition for everyone not just overweight people.

I must also tell you that I started my Shakeology journey off with the Shakeology Cleanse which was easy to do, gentle and energizing and I didnt need by additional products to do it just modify my Shakeology use for 3 days and there you go the HEALTHIEST cleanse availble in my opinion. Cleanses can be dangerous and they are not all created equal.

If you are wanting to kick off your health with the Shakeolgy 3-day Cleanse you can find out how by clicking HERE. Simple, easy to stick to, and gentle and effective. I lost 5 lbs just during my cleanse.

So I wanted to find out more about Maca which is also is an ingredient in Shakeology.

So I started doing some research and this is what I learned about out Maca.

I found this article  by Cathy Wong that I thought really gave great information on its benefits.

Maca  is a root plant consumed as a food and for medicinal purposes. Maca is also known as “Peruvian ginseng” (despite the fact that it is not a member of the ginseng family), because it is used as a folk remedy to increase stamina, energy, and sexual function.

Long used to enhance energy and boost stamina, maca is often touted as an aphrodisiac and a natural means of improving sexual performance and fertility. Some research suggests that maca may offer certain health benefits.

Benefits of Maca

Proponents claim that maca may help with these health concerns:

  • fatigue
  • infertility
  • symptoms of menopause
  • sexual dysfunction in women
  • sexual dysfunction in men (including erectile dysfunction)

Maca is also said to aid in the treatment of cancer.

The Science Behind Maca

Here’s a look at the available research on maca and its potential health benefits:

1) Maca and Sexual Function

There is “limited evidence” for maca’s effectiveness in improving sexual function in men and women, according to a 2010 report published in BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine. The report’s authors analyzed four clinical trials, two of which found that maca may have positive effects on sexual dysfunction or sexual desire in healthy menopausal women or healthy adult men. However, the other two trials found that maca failed to produce any positive effects on sexual function.

In a 2008 study from CNS Neuroscience & Therapeutics, researchers found that maca may help alleviate sexual dysfunction caused by use of selective-serotonin reuptake inhibitors (or SSRIs, a class of medications used in treatment of depression) The study involved 20 people with depression, all of whom were experiencing SSRI-induced sexual dysfunction. Results revealed that maca may also help improve libido.

2) Maca and Fertility

One small study looked at the effect of 4 months of treatment with maca tablets on semen quality in nine adult men. Treatment with maca resulted in increased semen volume, sperm count, and sperm motility. Serum levels of testosterone and estradiol were not affected.

There are different types of maca, including yellow, black, and red maca. Black maca appears to have the greatest effect on sperm count, followed by yellow maca, which has moderate effects.

3) Maca and Mood in Menopause

Maca may help ease anxiety and depression in postmenopausal women, according to a 2008 study from the journal Menopause. For the study, 14 postmenopausal women took 3.5 grams of powdered maca for six weeks and then took a matching placebo for another six weeks. Study results showed that maca helped reduce anxiety and depression, as well as improve sexual function.

4) Maca and Energy

Although preliminary findings from animal-based studies indicate that maca may help improve endurance, there is currently a lack of scientific support for the claim that maca can help boost energy and fight fatigue.

All of this from just one of the 70 other healthy ingredients in Shakeology! Wow!
